Meet Croom Medical at OMTEC 2024 in Chicago
< 1 min to readCroom Medical, a leader in orthopaedic implant contract manufacturing located in Ireland and a use case owner in COGNIMAN, will participate in OMTEC 2024, the Orthopaedic Manufacturing and Technology Exposition and Conference. The event will be held from 11 – 13 June at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Centre in Chicago, Illinois.
Visitors to OMTEC 2024 can find Croom Medical at booth #116, where the team will present advancements in orthopaedic implant manufacturing, highlighting technologies that drive cost-effective and scalable manufacturing solutions.
Croom Medical will also collaborate with Global Advanced Metals (GAM) to showcase a Tantalum-based medical device with additive manufacturing capability using laser-powder-bed-fusion technologies. Tantalum, known for its stability and longevity, offers superior characteristics compared to traditional titanium for joint replacement implants. Recently, Croom Medical unveiled a prototype hybrid titanium and tantalum-based orthopaedic implant.
Croom Medical’s role in COGNIMAN
In the additive manufacturing of orthopaedic implants, complex geometries pose challenges in both printing and post-processing. Determining orientation, where supporting material is required, as well as post-processing and polishing are critical to producing a high-quality implant. Presently, this process relies heavily on manual operations. Additionally, there are potential hazards for operators.
COGNIMAN aims to develop a solution to semi-automate the entire process chain from design to finishing and inspection. Simulation and intelligent design will minimise support material. An AI-driven collaborative robot system developed by the project will remove supporting materials and perform surface finishing of the implant regardless of its shape and size. Algorithms will ensure seamless and safe human-robot interaction
