COGNIMAN Convention 2024 – 17 October

About the event

The EU project COGNIMAN aims at automating traditionally labour-intensive processes with the goal of improving productivity, efficiency, flexibility and sustainability in manufacturing. The project integrates technologies like AI, machine learning and simulations to help manufacturers adapt to evolving industry demands.

In October, COGNIMAN will host a one-day event in Norway to discuss current industry challenges, show the potential of COGNIMAN solutions and explore opportunities to solve your use cases via collaborations and funding schemes.

Date – 17 October 2024
Venue – Radisson Blu Caledonian, Kristiansand, Norway

Agenda

8:30

Registration and networking

Begin the event by registering and connecting with fellow participants. Use this time to network and exchange ideas.

9:00

Welcome

Kick off the event with a warm welcome from our host, setting the stage for the day.

Speaker: Christophe Pinck from EYDE Cluster

9:10

Smart manufacturing with COGNIMAN

Learn about the EU project COGNIMAN – Leveraging artificial intelligence, data processing and analytics, robotics and autonomous systems for a smart European manufacturing environment.

Speaker: Dr Ahmed Nabil Belbachir from NORCE

9:30

Waste not, want not: Achieving zero waste in glass fibre manufacturing

Glass fibres are produced from molten glass, but breaks in the fibres disrupt production and are hard to predict. COGNIMAN aims to automate break detection using sensors and machine learning, improving operator response, reducing waste and lowering the production’s carbon footprint.

Speaker: Dr Martin Hemmer from 3B-the fibreglass company

9:40

Safety first: Finishing large metal parts

A burr is excess material left on a part’s edge after manufacturing. Deburring removes this material. For large part manufacturing, COGNIMAN aims to develop a robotic solution to automate deburring using machine learning and sensors, improving part quality, increasing efficiency and reducing physically strenuous work for operators.

Speaker: Arkaitz Aranburu from GOIMEK

9:50

Faster additive: Automated post-processing of 3D-printed medical implants

Medical implants made with additive manufacturing require highly sophisticated post-processing to make sure no sharp edges remain which could potentially damage tissue during implantation. Complexity increases with patient-specific implants since every person has a unique geometry. COGNIMAN aims to develop algorithms to guide robots to automate this process while maintaining high-quality finishes. The end result would be a safe, flexible robot system that collaborates seamlessly with the operators.

Speaker: Dr Shane Keaveney from CROOM

10:00

Warehouse efficiency: A digital inventory

How to operate and maintain a large outdoor site with finished and semi-finished products in batches or large variety, size and dimension in steel manufacturing? This is the challenge COGNIMAN seeks to solve. COGNIMAN aims to establish a digital library that provides a real-time overview and will thus allow full visibility of stock and internal logistics processes alike.

Speaker: Tommaso Silvestri from ABS

10:10

Generative AI at Elkem

Elkem is one of the leading companies in Norway for environmentally responsible production of materials. Its principal products are silicon, silicones, ferrosilicon, foundry alloys, carbon materials and microsilica.

Speaker: Gunnar Hansen from Elkem

10:20

Cobot welding solutions for the industry

Nymo, a leading engineering and construction company in the oil and gas sector, teamed up with Pioneer Robotics to enhance their operations through advanced robotic integration.

Speakers: Finn Oscar Karlsen from Pioneer Robotics

10:30

Smart manufacturing: The tech trends you can't afford to ignore

Engage in this session as experts dissect the technologies making smart manufacturing a reality, including robotics, Internet of Things and data analytics. Panellists will discuss the practical impacts and future possibilities of these transformative tools.

Panellists: Wissam Mallouli from Montimage, Oliver Avram from SUPSI and Gunnar Hansen from Elkem

11:30

Interactive workshops: Focused sessions on key topics

Choose from three parallel workshops, each offering a deep dive into a distinct topic.

Topic 1 – Innovate: Harnessing enabling technologies for smart manufacturing

Moderators: Wissam Mallouli from Montimage and Assia Belbachir from NORCE
