The EU-funded project COGNIMAN, aimed at advancing smart manufacturing technologies, has successfully completed its first review meeting, in which representatives of the European Commission evaluate the project’s progress. Launched in January 2023, COGNIMAN focuses on automating complex manufacturing processes to improve productivity, flexibility and sustainability in the European manufacturing sector.

During the review, the project partners showcased the progress across key areas and presented a detailed plan for the next phase of the project. Reviewers commented, asked questions and gave recommendations. “The conversations during the review were positive and helpful to bring COGNIMAN forward”, said Dr Nabil Belbachir, Research Director at NORCE and lead coordinator of COGNIMAN. Thus, the successful review marks a significant milestone in the development of COGNIMAN.

The reviewers highlighted several achievements, particularly the notable progress in developing solutions for diverse use cases, strong ethical oversight of technological developments and a detailed plan for the next project phase, which includes further development and testing. They also emphasised the upcoming COGNIMAN Convention 2024 in Norway as a starting point for establishing a network of open-access pilots to test these solutions. This event will bring together professionals from the Norwegian manufacturing industry.

“The first review was an important milestone to measure our progress,” said Dr Ahmed Nabil Belbachir. “We could make the team’s dedication visible while showing important achievements and greatly appreciate the evaluators’ constructive and supportive feedback. The successful completion of this step gives our ambition a boost as we continue to change manufacturing into smart manufacturing. With the COGNIMAN team full of energy, we are eager to go the last mile for success.”

The next phase of COGNIMAN will involve extensive testing and scaling up of the technologies to meet broader market demands. Additionally, the project will prioritise identifying opportunities to facilitate deploying these solutions across a wider array of manufacturing environments.
